This is one of those forehead smacking ideas you wonder why someone hasn’t done before. Brilliant! And then you realize that the effort it takes to choose which papers to include, assemble the samples, add review comments, and process the orders is a lot of time and is really a labor of love. So hats off to John for diving into this venture for the benefit of the pen enthusiast community!
The 18 sample packet has a wide variety of papers that includes ones I own or have used, some I know of and haven’t tried, and some I haven’t seen or read about. John has added a thoughtful several sentence review on a strip of paper for each sample set (that includes 2-3 sheets about A5 size), affixed to them with Washi tape so you can remove it and not damage the sheets, and includes a retail price per sheet.
Going forward, and I hope John is willing to continue this, it would be great to expand the selection and allow the purchase of say 18 choices from a catalog of maybe 30 or more. That would give the buyer a chance to manage their curiosity more directly, though of course it adds another couple of layers to the stocking and processing of orders. It might also encourage repeat purchases.
This is certainly a worthwhile investment, and the price of this one packet will pay for itself if you find a paper you love- or hate- before randomly ordering full notebooks or pads.

From my point of view these packs are invaluable; they allow me the chance to try out a range of papers before having to commit to a whole notebook. For instance, to buy a Baron Fig notebook on its own would cost me more than the sample pack but with the sample pack I get to try before I buy and decide if I want to make the investment.
I’ve tried out a few of the samples with different pens and inks and I’ve had good results with each of them; of course, this then leads to the very complicated question of which one to order first.
All in all, I would highly recommend the sample packs they are an excellent way of trying out different papers without the financial commitment of buying one or more notebooks.

As a new fountain pen enthusiast, having the opportunity to test a large sample of paper was a dream come true. I enjoyed the variety and texture of the papers in the pack and it was fun to see how different pens, nibs and inks reacted. It was a very small investment with a great return.

No question about it this was an excellent product and a purchase I’m very happy to have made. I’m still very new to fountain pens but I’ve already collected many different brands of pens. However I’ve never used any paper other than what I already had around the house.
This sample set should be a basic beginning fountain pen enthusiast purchase.
I watched a bunch of reviews of paper on YouTube (too many). I read some very nice and detailed blog posts on fountain pen paper and notebooks on JetPens. I nearly ordered the notebook sample pack from Goulet. But then I found this paper sample pack and it turned out to be perfect and give me at least one unexpected finding.
Don’t worry about quantity of test sheets there are plenty to check colors, sheen, bleed through and dry time. I pulled out a piece of each paper and immediately numbered them. I intentionally don’t look at the brand names for each sample.
I kept going back to #13 because the paper performed well writing on front and back but even more so the numbered pages. #2 and #13 had the properties I looked for and were able to highlight the deep dark green of my Noodler’s Zhivago.
I learned I tended to like the entirely blank paper options. The real surprise was that one of my favorite papers was #8. It was heavy, practically no bleed through, smooth and a nice bright white. It was also the least expensive paper of the entire bunch and was in fact printer paper from HP!
Thank you so much for taking the time and obvious effort in putting this together.

What a fantastic product!
This paper sample pack has quite literally provided me with hours of entertainment trying out different pens and inks on each paper. I’ve ranked the papers a few times and at the top of the list is the Tomoe River 68gsm with Life Noble in a very close second. Followed by Clairfontaine Triomphe, then Apica Premium CD, and so on and so forth.
I bring the packet of paper with me and pick one sheet to use for the day at work as well. Basically, sheet 1 was for my blind test, then ink blotting and sampling. Then Page 2 is for work, page 3 is for doodling and fun writing.
I’m very happy with my purchase and will most definitely be a long-time customer!
