A3 Doodle Project – April 2026

Continuing my A3 Doodle Project, here is the April doodle. I had originally planned on filling up the entire sheet of paper with this pattern, but it was deceptively much more time consuming than I thought it would be. Every time I’d sit down to doodle for 10-15 minutes, I’d put down my pen and it looked like hardly any progress had been made. I don’t know if it was due to the random nature of the pattern or the hand fatigue of drawing short lines, but somehow this one took up a lot of time. At some point during the month I decided that I wasn’t going to be able to fill the entire page, so I started shaping it out to look interesting and balanced, so this is the finished doodle!

For this pattern I used a Sailor Pro Gear with a Zoom nib and paired it with J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor. I’ve used this combination many times and usually it’s my go-to for this pattern. I really enjoy using this ink with a big, wet nib and you don’t get much bigger or wetter than a Zoom nib.

On the topic of using a shimmer ink for doodle, I usually try and avoid it. As you can see in the image below, the shimmer can get unevenly distributed in the pattern. Each time I picked up my pen I made sure to move it around to try and agitate the shimmer that had settled in the converter before I started using it, but it doesn’t always work.

One of my favorite things about Emerald of Chivor is how drastically different it looks when viewed with and without sheen. I feel like a lot of sheening inks just always look sheeny and lose their original color, but EoC can look completely green or completely sheeny depending on the angle at which it’s viewed.

Here’s a look at the pattern

I’ve never made a guide for this pattern since it’s really not a pattern at all, just small curved lines and dots. If you’re interested in trying it for yourself, I think the most important thing to keep in mind is the overall line spacing consistency. If you leave too much space between the lines, it will look very open and empty, too little space it will look crowded and the lines may even run together. If you do decide to try it out, let me know how it goes!

  1. Oh my goodness! It looks like a kind of coral! And that ink is perfect for the project. I have never heard of a zoom nib. Will have to look that up. I may have to try this on a smaller scale. I’ve done a few, and I get all obsessed about making a ‘c’ shape, but I see that you don’t worry about that, and it just looks great! I also realize that I am leaving too much space between the lines. I will focus on that next time I make one. Thanks for the inspiration!
