A3 Doodle Project – September 2026

Continuing my A3 Doodle Project, here is the September doodle. I know October is almost over, but I still wanted to post this one, even if it is late. I took August off because I didn’t think I’d have enough time, so you didn’t miss that one. As you all know, summer months can get pretty busy, and I wasn’t sure how much time I’d have in September either, so I went with something a little simpler and different than my typical doodles.

I really enjoy using water with fountain pen inks and wanted to work that into one of these big doodles. I also wanted to keep this one fairly simple. So, after playing around a bit, I decided on circles laid out in a grid pattern that I would then paint in with water.

I started by drawing circles based on a grid pattern

I then randomly connected the circles with straight lines

Finally, I filled each circle with water to get some chromatography from the ink

For the ink I chose Sailor Amamoyoi because it has some nice chromatography that I wanted the water to bring out. I printed a 10-mm grid that I placed underneath the Tomoe River 52gsm paper and could easily see and use as a guide for my circles. Once all of the circles were drawn, I went back and used a paintbrush to fill each one with some water.

And an ever closer look at the chromatography

To be honest, I’m not crazy about the way this one turned out. I enjoyed doing it, but it’s just not very exciting to look at. Which brings up a good question… is it more important to enjoy doing the work or to enjoy the final product? What do you think?

I used an Omas Paragon and a (very) beat up paintbrush
